ロックには、けっこう「外」からの恐怖を扱ったものが少なくない。ブルースをはじめとする黒人たちの音楽が、彼ら自身の存在が(白人社会に対する）「外部」の脅威たりうる自覚や自信を（どこかでその）原動力としていたように聞こえるのに対し、そうした黒人音楽に白人社会の内部で幼い魂として反応し、感応し、呼応した白人のロックは、(自分たちの世界の危うさをより明確にする）恐怖や脅威（もしくは終末）をさらなる外部に求めねばならなかったのだろう。それは東洋的な哲学や宇宙観、西欧の伝統的な裏面でもあるオカルトと称される隠秘思想や神秘思想、さらにはアインシュタイン以降の物理学や非ユークリッド幾何学に基づくＳＦ的な空想の方向にも回路の拡張を求めたのだった。そして外部もまた生きる場所、生きる対象として想定されてくるところに(西欧文明のある種の）拡大主義、拡張主義*2を感じてしまうのだ。そして現実に２０世紀後半の人工衛星の打ち上げにはじまる現在も進行中の宇宙開発計画もまた地球外部への（西欧人種の）拡張マインドを原動力としたものであるに違いないと（わたしには）思われる。(この先、工事中）

「ジギー・スターダスト」「アラジンの正気」につづいてジョージ・オーウェルの「１９８４年」の音楽的な翻案を構想していたボウイが、その著作権の保持者であるオーウェルの未亡人にその翻案の認可を拒絶され、全面的に書き直したのが「ダイアモンド・ドッグズ」というアルバムだが、その登場人物やディテールにサミュエル・Ｒ・ディレイニーの「Dhalgren」*3との類似を指摘する声も少なくない。

*1:出演者が全員本物の畸形者たちというサーカス一座の畸形芸人の反乱を描いた映画「フリークス」（１９３２年作品）の監督

*2:歴史上の一時期、それは「帝国主義」や「植民地建設」となってこの地上に物理的に現象したそうした動きのその根底にあるものと考えられる。
