1979年１月29日、カリフォルニア州サンディエゴのある小学校で学校の向かいに住む16歳の少女が突然銃を乱射、大人２人が死亡、児童８人、警官１人が重傷を負うなど惨劇に、逮捕された少女は首をすくめて「あたし月曜日が大嫌いなのよ。おかげでスッキリしたわ」と語り、「理由なんかないわよ。ただ面白かっただけ」「池でアヒルを撃ってるみただったわ。子供たちはおとなしい仔牛の群れみたいだったし、狙い撃ちだったわ」と語って世界を震撼させた。その後の理由なき大量殺人のはしりとなった事件、これを（後にライブエイドなどのボランティア活動で知られるようになる）ボブ・ゲルドフが率いるアイルランドのグループ、ブームタウンラッツが歌にしてシングル盤で発表、大西洋の両岸でヒットした。
