キンクスのレイ・デイヴィスは、
ザ・フーのピート・タウンジェンドと並んでイギリス社会に暮らす人間にとっては、ドキッとするような歌やニヤリとする歌、またそこはかとない郷愁を感じさせる歌を書くウィットに富んだ優れたソング・ライターだが、
この曲「ウェル・リスペクテッド・マン」は、まさにキンクスがキンクスになった曲といえるだろう。
それまでの彼らのヒット曲とはサウンドも歌詞もがらりと変わって、
とても歌になりそうにないつまらない人間をつまらないメロディーにのせて歌い、
それを堂々とシングル盤として発売してヒットさせてしまった。
いまからほぼ４０年前のヒット曲になるが、この曲の成功が、元祖ヘヴィーメタル・サウンドといわれる「You Really Got Me 」や「All Day and All of the Night」のヒットで一躍シーンのトップグループに躍り出たキンクスのその後を大いに決定づける新たな方向を指し示すことなった。
歌われているのは、
当時のイギリスのミドルクラスの暮らしだが、
以前、紹介したアメリカの地方のそれを歌ったサイモン＆ガーファンクルの「ミセス・ロビンソン」と並べてみると英米の対照がおのずと浮かび上がってくる。
